The last blog finished with us sitting 16th in the Championship, after some excellent January form saw us rise from 21st. Could we continue that form to solidify ourselves as a Championship team for next season?
Quite obviously, yes we could! We never dipped below 18th after January as we kept up good form until relegation was impossible. Wolves ran away with the league, whilst Leeds finally get back into the Premier League.
A shaky April co-incided with me giving youngsters more game time, but overall I am thrilled with how the season went, with a wonderful 9 match unbeaten run in there.
Shane Long easily won player of the year, and after banging in 19 goals for the season it is easy to see why he also picked up signing of the season. His physicals are dropping and at 34 he is definately on the way down, but with club captain Luke Chambers and vice-captain Cole Skuse both leaving the club, his experience next year could be needed. I therefore took up the option to extend his contract by a year. On loan Jack Clarke deserves a mention too, scoring 10 goals from the right wing. Myles Kenlock picks up young player of the season (is 24 a young player?) after contributing 8 assists from left back.
Thoughts therefore move on to next year, and in all honesty the same again would be a great achievement. We need about 6 new players bringing in, and the board have given me £250k to do so, showing exactly how far out of touch we are with some of the bigger clubs in the division (Southampton & Palace are happily spending 10-15 million on players in the summer). If we could therefore have a safe mid-lower table finish without ever looking in danger, both the board and myself would be thrilled!
