Boy it’s been a while since I wrote anything…good job nothing has happened in the world since.
You join us at the end of the January 2021 transfer window, which ended up being far more important than I hoped it would be.
Our early season form ranged from patchy to awful, as the following results will show. It was clear that we needed to tighten up defensively.
I therefore made a new Centre Back my priority for the January window, and had already scouted available targets so that I could move as quickly as possible.
Ryan Bennett was bought in for £250K from Wolves, in what I thought was a steal! The board initially tried to block the move due to his age, but luckily promotion last year gave me enough credit in the bank to overturn this decision. I’m hoping the fact he is an ex Norwich player does not get held against him by the fans – but surely if he could help turn results around in January, he would become a quick favourite?
Its fair to say he had an immediate impact!
An unbeaten January in the league including big wins in the teams around us (Luton and Shrewsbury) helped us propel from 21st in the league to 16th.
From this point, I am hoping we should easily stay up. Wolves are possibly going to win the league!
Our three best players so far have been Left Back Myles Kenlock who continues to improve into a really solid, steady player who chips in with Assists. Emyr Huws who anchors our midfield and gets play started, and best of all has been summer free transfer Shane Long.
Long has been slightly injury hit, but at 33/34 has given me exactly what I wanted from him. Hard work and effort as a Pressing Forward, but 10 goals from 24 appearances has been a far better return than I hoped for. His contract is up at the end of the year, but I am tempted to keep him on as a backup, especially as a good mentor for younger players coming through.
Hopefully that season will also be spent in the Championship, as long as form does not drop off a cliff!
Thanks for reading guys.
