(FM19) #7 – The Diary of Alex Cairns

Welcome back to Newgen News, we have now reached the end of the 2022/23 season, Hodlers second season in charge of the mighty “Accies”.

We are pleased to announce we have been given special access to view and publish extracts from one of Hodler’s new signing over the summer of 2022, Goalkeeper Alex Cairns.

Throughout this we will show screenshots to go with his extracts to illustrate his journey through his first season at Hamilton. We hope you enjoy.

The Diary of Alex Cairns

June 1st 2022

Six great years at Fleetwood are coming an end, it is clear I have outgrown the club and also the club has outgrown me. I have been transfer listed and now have my agent on the lookout for a new club. Rumour has it a Scottish club is in for me but there has been no word to back this up.

June 3rd 2022

What a day it’s been! At 8:30am my phone rung and it was my agent, Hamilton Academical wanted me, I have heard of them and have heard of their manager Patrick Hodler so was excited to speak with him in more detail. My agent set up the meeting and by 11am I was in the car and on my way to meet Patrick in Glasgow.

The second I saw him I had this feeling that he wanted me at the club. Mr Hodler said he had been tracking me for over 12 months but due to finances couldn’t afford to bring me in. We talked for around 3 hours, discussing his vision for the club and that he saw me as a major player in his push for promotion.

The contract was discussed, drawn up and signed by the time I had left at 5pm. I am moving to Hamilton…..I hope my wife and kids are happy!

Day One at Hamilton, boy it’s been a rollercoaster week, roll back 7 days and I had no idea where I would be for the upcoming season. The club is amazing, the players have been so welcoming and the walk into the ground made me feel incredible.

I also met the new signings, Mr Hodler has certainly been a busy man over the past few weeks. He stated to me that he had to improve the team, numerous loan players had left and he also had to deal with losing two of his major young players who were both snapped up by Rangers over the Summer, I had heard good things about Liam Campbell and David Smith so I wish them well at their new club.

Training has started and I haven’t seen much of the boss, it’s clear he is more of an “in the background” kind of boss and has left the new Assistant Manager Charles Mendy in charge of getting everyone fit.

The new signings all look quality, especially Anthony Stewart and Bobby Adekanye who look top quality for this level of football

More new signings have come through the door! The squad is looking so good for the upcoming season, we have such a good mix of youth and experience. Tom Scully has come in from Norwich on a free and with Hodler looking like he wants us to play a 4123 formation he looks quality as our DM.

The new season is underway and before we even kick a ball in the League we have to play some cup competition group stage! 4 games in the group and we managed to win all 4, including beating Premiership side St Johnstone, I’m frustrated though that we cannot keep a clean sheet, some of the defending has been sub-par so far, let’s hope we can get tighter, but as long as we are winning I’m happy.

Wow what a busy start to the season but my god it’s been incredible, I don’t think I have been in a team that has clicked this quickly! We have ended the month with 7 wins out of 7, I have kept 3 clean sheets and we are scoring for fun. There is certainly a buzz around this club, we are all beginning to believe this could be our year!

21st September 2022

The amazing run has come to an end, we were on a run of 14 straight competitive wins, top of the league after 7 games and already 8 points clear. I was also on a run of 3 clean sheets until tonight where we faced Premiership side Partick in the BetFred Quarters, we played fantastic but couldn’t find a way through, extra time came around and Partick scored, I’m annoyed with myself as I should’ve saved it, Lewis Martin got us the equaliser and the game looked to be going to penalties until they nicked it with 3 minutes to go. Our winning run has come to an end, we are all gutted as we know how much the boss wanted us to continue our run. We move on though and hope we can keep our form up in the league

What a frustrating few games it’s been, our form has fallen apart and we just cannot put our finger on why. Teams seem to have shut up shop on us and our forwards are really struggling to find a way through, the boss has asked to sit back a bit more and try and invite teams onto us to hit them over the top, we as team want to turn this around and I know the forwards are incredibly annoyed with how they are playing.

30th October 2022

I’m beginning to wonder if our boss is a genius, struggling for goals, he got us to train our new style, sitting back and hitting them on the break and my god did it work. We scored 6! YES SIX goals in one bloody game! I have never seen the boss so happy and relieved!

It was so nice to see Ryan (Hardie) get a hat-trick, the lad is a quality forward and has been amazing so far this season. I know the boss wanted to buy a new Striker in the summer and really struggled so the pressure has been on Ryan to keep performing.

1st January 2023

I haven’t written anything for a while, it’s just been mega busy, games coming thick and fast, a lot more extra training due to our patchy form but the boss gave us Christmas Day and Boxing Day off for a well earned break and the freshness certainly seems to have worked, we have just come off of one of our best results for a few matches. We played Falkirk who are in second and have been catching us up over the past few weeks at the top. Once again it was the main man, and my best mate Ryan Hardie who grabbed the winner to put us 6 points clear at the top of the league.

November/December Results

January 8th 2023

The boss seems to have found someone to take a bit of the pressure off of Hardie upfront and also provide us a bit of an experiences head in the squad. James Collins has come in, a proven striker and has been without a club since leaving Luton end of last season.

22nd January 2023

It’s nights like this that’ll live long in my career. We have just beaten Premiership side Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup, it wasn’t easy, we somehow managed to turn a 1-0 loss around with 3 minutes to go to nab it 2-1 in the 91st minute! I’ve never heard a noise like I did tonight at the SuperSeal! Bring on the next round!

31st January 2023

What a lovely boss! He has given us all the day off to sit in our boxers and watch Deadline Day on Sky Sports!! It’s been pretty quiet here at Hamilton, no one has left but the boss has brought one new player in, a young Austrian by the name of Martin Moormann to provide some back up to the Defence.

The Scottish Window has just shut and it’s been very quiet, the biggest deal being Hibs signing a Goalkeeper called Fabri from Brest (don’t laugh!).

The whole window has been dominated by Celtic selling players to bigger clubs.

The biggest deal in England saw Declan Rice swap one London club for another as he moved to Crystal Palace for £9, a brilliant deal in my eyes. Other than that it’s been a nice quiet day. I can’t wait to get back to training!

27th February 2023

Sad news in the camp as one of the nicest lads you would wish to meet Billy King has been seriously injured in a reserve game. Billy has been out since September after breaking his leg, he was coming back playing the odd reserve game to gain fitness but unfortunately has picked up another injury putting him out for another 4 months. I really wish the lad all the luck in his recovery. Fingers crossed he comes back fit and strong next season

4th March 2023

I’m really hoping these performances in the cup won’t affect our league form, we only have 9 games left and are 8 points clear in the Championship, we have had a couple of shaky results but my word our form in the cup is incredible!

Our Scottish Cup Quarter Final looked a tricky one as we played SPL team Partick away, we absolutely smashed them 5-2, I don’t think I’ve seen us that dangerous on the break all season. Matt Butcher also scored 2 absolute screamers! Hamilton are off to Hampden for the second straight season, this time we are playing Celtic!!!

17th March 2023

For the second season in a row Hamilton are into the IRN Bru Cup final, the boss clearly loves a cup run and although the fans don’t seen too fussed by this competition, we as players love winning silverware. Raith are our opponents, they are 2nd in the league (we are 1st) and are on a good run of form so it’s going to be a tough task.

18th March 2023

We have only gone and done it! For the second season in a row Hamilton have won the IRN BRU cup! And didn’t we do it in style, fair enough it was 100% my fault for the goal which got them back in the game but my word we were amazing after the red card to poor Robbie Pugh. Ryan (Hardie) once again showing how lethal he is in front of goal!

It’s been a long time coming but I have my hands on a trophy! With our standing in the league I seriously don’t expect this to be the last piece of silverware I collect this season!

22nd April 2023

We are on our way to Hampden for the Scottish Cup semi final against Celtic and after our poor 0-0 showing against Morton in the week we failed to win the title ourselves, with Raith playing at home at home to Dundee United we all have had our ears glued to the radio. Raith fail to win and we are Champions and off the Premiership!

0-0 with 20 minutes to go and you could feel the boys were getting a bit too excited! Then the news came through…..1-0 to Dundee United……2-0 to Dundee United. I swear to God I saw tears in the boys eyes, 87 mins and Raith grabbed one back, nails were being chewed, the boys were hugging…….the the whistle went!

THE NOISE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

HAMILTON ARE OFF TO THE SCOTTISH PREMIERSHIP!! This is what I came here for, the boss sold his vision to me and he has delivered it in emphatic style! 2 games to spare! I can’t quite believe how well this season has gone, but next year we will be playing the big guns of Scotland week in, week out!

Let’s just hope we get our heads in the game for the big match tomorrow!

23rd April 2023

What a day it’s been at Hampden for the Scottish Cup Semi final, the ground is amazing and it was fantastic to see all the Hamilton fans. In fact it’s been an incredible weekend!

Unfortunately we couldn’t get the win today, I don’t think anyone expected us to and the joy of yesterday certainly took it out of us. We did however make the fans proud and the boss. We held our own and it was only in the last 15 minutes where the legs went and Celtic took advantage.

A 1-0 defeat is disappointing but it gives us hope we can give them a challenge next season!

We have also made the Chairman very happy as that game gave him £2.5m!

6th May 2023

The season is over and it’s time to put my feet up, have a holiday with the wife and kids and look back on an incredible season. Promotion, the league title, the IRN Bru Cup title and a trip to Hampden. This season couldn’t have gone much better!

We would like to thank Alex Cairns for letting us delve into his mind over the season, it has been lovely to see the ups, and the downs of a professional footballer through a successful season! Below are a few screenshots showing you the end of season awards and stats.

As some of you who follow me on Twitter will know, after a lot of soul searching and chatting to close FM friends I have decided to make this blog post my last in this series. I am absolutely loving writing for everyone and appreciate each and everyone who has taken time to read my posts. My issue is because of the speed I play I am spending more time writing than actually playing, and because of that the writing is slowing me down. I’m also finding it harder and harder to think of new inventive ways of writing my season reviews, the ones I did before, for me were just slightly bland and a bit boring. What has happened now is I don’t think I can do any better than this!

I honestly hope I haven’t let anyone down. The blog won’t be going anywhere, I have something new, original and hopefully fun for everyone which will be coming out in the first week of December, the posts I have planned can be written way in advance, don’t require me to be actually “season reviewing” and also will hopefully showcase a different side to me and my writing style.

Also this save isn’t ending, I love it way too much! What I am doing is moving it over to my own personal Discord server where I will be doing real-time updating of the save, I will also be doing a thread at the end of each season on Twitter showing you how the season went.

So if you want to join my Discord server then please drop a comment on here or DM me on Twitter @newgenfm.

I am really excited for this little change but understand the sudden ending of my blog for this save may annoy people, unfortunately I have do what is best for me!

Thanks for reading and I hope you enjoy what I have to come!
